Residents banded together to clean up Evesham.

Anti-Litter Evesham organised a town-wide litter pick over the weekend as part of the Great British Big Spring Clean.

In total, 49 volunteers took part on Sunday (March 26), helping to fill 50 bags with litter.

Laura Van Toller, one of the organisers, said: “We were really pleased with the support but the amount of litter is increasing and it is not as if Evesham hasn't got enough public litter bins or each property have their own bins.

“New and existing volunteers took part and all enjoyed themselves and were pleased to join our anti-litter campaign.”

Among the group’s finds were two syringes and a strange piece of metal that they haven’t quite figured out what it is.

Several local businesses and organisations also got involved with the clean up.

Among them was the Red Lion pub, in Market Square.

Landlord Tom Doggett said: “It was really positive despite the weather, and it was lovely to be able to offer a warm coffee to the cold but happy litter pickers.

“It's a shame it has to be done at all, but turning it into a friendly and fun social event shows how you can create positivity even from such a negative situation.

“The town is looking lovely thanks to the dedication of Anti-Litter Evesham - not just on Sunday but all through the year - and we were proud to be able to offer some support.”

Outside the Red Lion, passers-by were treated to the sounds of the Singing Binman.

“The Singing Binman was a huge hit, and drew a lot of attention from passers-by,” added Mr Doggett.

“He'll definitely be back later in the year, so there's plenty of time for people to start planning another load of 'rubbish' jokes!”

Also taking part was Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston.

He said: “I was pleased to join dozens of other local volunteers in the Litter pic this weekend and thank Laura and the team for coordinating it.

"We all have a responsibility to look after the environment and our local community. But the volume and range of litter we found was disappointing.

"As the Keep Britain Tidy campaign says 'Don't be a tosser'.

"I encourage everyone to use the many bins provided or take rubbish home.”

Anti-Litter Evesham will be organising another litter pick in April, with the date and time to be announced on the group's Facebook page.
