A WOMAN was trapped in her car following a crash which killed a horse on a busy county road.

A woman was also taken to hospital after a car and horse and carriage crashed on the A46 Twyford roundabout on Saturday, May 20.

The horse died at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Officers were called to an accident on the A46 at Twyford roundabout at 5.02pm on Saturday, May 20.

"The collision involved a horse and a Hyundai car. Sadly the horse died at the scene. The 66-year-old female driver of the car was initially trapped but treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

"The road had to be closed in both directions while the scene was cleared and was re-opened shortly after 2am on Sunday, May 21."

When Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service arrived, no people were trapped in the vehicle.

A spokesperson said:  “A crew from Evesham Fire Station attended the scene after the collision involving one horse and cart and a car with no people trapped.

“The horse was sadly found deceased in the carriageway.

“A female casualty from the car was left in the care of the ambulance service 

“The incident was left with the police by HWFRS at 5.57pm.”

Motorists were urged by West Mercia Police to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene. On arrival, we discovered one patient, a woman, from the car.

"She was treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to the Alexandra Hospital for further treatment."
