YOUNG people need to be better educated about the dangers of alcohol use, it was warned this week..

Peter Thorogood, chief executive of the Worcestershire Community Alcohol Team, said he was fearful that youngsters are not being given enough information about the dangers of alcohol misuse and its consequences.

He said: “A whole bottle of whisky contains 30-40 units, depending on its strength, and the recommended units for a male is 21 a week.

“Therefore drinking a whole bottle of spirits, two week’s worth in one setting, could well be fatal.

“What’s frightening is that youngsters are not given adequate information about alcohol misuse throughout their education.”

Mr Thorogood was speaking after an inquest at Worcestershire Coroners Court this week found that a young man who died after a house party in Evesham drank too much.

Oliver Marc Bailey, from Weston Road, Honeybourne, was found wrapped in a duvet with an empty bottle of Jack Daniels beside him by friends at a house party in Maple Place, Evesham, in the early hours of Sunday, August 24.

Despite the efforts of friends and ambulance crew to revive him, the 21-year-old forklift driver died shortly after in Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Dr Terry Jones, a pathologist at the hospital, confirmed the cause of death was acute alcoholic intoxication after blood samples showed he had 359ml of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

This is the equivalent to being four-and-a-half-times over the drink drive limit.

After hearing the evidence, coroner Geraint Williams, said: “I have been told people were consuming significant amounts of alcohol and in the course of the evening a full bottle of Jack Daniels was consumed by Oliver.

“It seems to me that anyone who consumes alcohol as Oliver did on this occasion is abusing alcohol. He drank too much and died as a consequence.”

Oliver’s parents Anthony and Gillian Bailey attended the inquest but left without commenting.
