A PETITION calling for more road safety measures on a busy Bidford road has been handed to the county council.
Worried mother Louise Bayford started the petition for a pelican crossing on Bidford Bridge in March after her four-year-old daughter Jackie was nearly knocked down by a car travelling along the Honeybourne Road.
Her campaign has since gathered pace with more than 2,700 villagers and visitors signing the petition in support of the pedestrian crossing which would be linked with the existing traffic lights.
Mrs Bayford said she realised there was a need for a crossing on the bridge after speaking to other parents.
“There have been at least 13 other incidents where people have had a near miss,” she said.
“A dog was hit not long ago and I was told by a health and safety inspector if a child was hit it wouldn’t survive.
“The speed limit is 30mph but not many people observe it.”
The mum-of-two said she hoped Bidford Parish Council, Stratford District Council and Warwickshire County Council would work together to fund the project.
Mrs Bayford met with the chairman of Warwickshire County Council and Bidford county councillor Peter Barnes last Thursday to hand him the petition.
But Coun Barnes said while they were fully supporting the petition, it was not yet clear if the county council would have the funds to support the £25,000 cost of installing the crossing.
“It’s apparent that it’s very dangerous,” he said.
“There are no results from the traffic monitor survey yet but if the county council feels there is not enough traffic we will have to fund it elsewhere.”
He added he would like to see more petitions brought to the county council in his new role as chairman.
