TOP scorer Sam Bowen has left Common Road.

The surprise news came earlier this week when manager Phil Mullen revealed he had released the former Worcester City striker.

"He didn't fit into my plans," the United manager declared. "Sam is an out and out scorer but if his presence affects the way I want to play then that is if no use to us.

"Everybody is working hard for each other at the moment and we just can't afford to lose any of the atmosphere that we have created during the season.

"Sam's not a great trainer and that is something we have spoken about. You can't have one rule for one and one for another."

Mullen also revealed that he would have found it difficult to find a place for Bowen in his side at present. "Sam wouldn't have stood for that," the manager said.

Bowen (left) scored 12 goals in 12 matches for the Robins, but his last goal was six weeks ago in the 1-1 home draw with Atherstone.

Mullen revealed that he wasn't looking to replace his front man immediately but said: "I am always looking for additional players but the priority at the moment is to get John Deakin here on a permanent basis."

The Worcester City midfielder, in the middle of a second month's loan spell, will be available for Saturday's FA Umbro Trophy tie at Cinderford after being ineligible for the previous round at Leatherhead.

The Forest of Dean side has yet to win in the league at home and they are currently next to bottom.

Should the game beat the weather and end all-square after 90 minutes a replay will take place next Tuesday (7.45).

Progress will prove another boost to a fine campaign and will bring further confidence to Mullen's side ahead of successive league matches against Mangotsfield and Bilston.

Tuesday night's scheduled Birmingham Senior Cup second round tie at home to Hednesford was postponed. The winners will visit West Bromwich Albion,

The club's youth team visit Malvern Town tonight in the Midland Floodlit League.
