A TERRIFIED mother in South Littleton has vowed to shame speeding drivers into slowing down, saying she is now too afraid to walk her own children to school in the morning.

Lisa Tanner, who has four children aged three, five, seven and eight, has lived on Bennetts Hill for just over a year, but in that time says she has witnessed a number of accidents.

Having decided enough is enough, Lisa, her family and friends created placards which they held aloft to drivers this week to remind them of the 40mph limit she feels is being ignored.

Lisa said: “We have lived here for just over a year and in this time have witnessed three quite serious accidents virtually right in front of our house. The 40mph speed limit is totally ignored and we see cars fly by at nearer 80mph some days.

“It means, as parents, we are too scared to walk to school in the morning and we are nervous about letting our children out the front.”

A traffic action group has now been set up in South Littleton following an incident in September in which a car left the road and ploughed into a house in Main Street. The driver of the vehicle was fined more than £1,000 and banned from driving for 20 months.

The group has since asked for vehicle activated speed signs to be installed in the village.

Roy Fullee, Worcestershire County Council's senior highways liaison engineer, said: “We would like to reassure local residents that their assessment will be carried out as soon as possible, which will then determine whether the parish council's application has proved successful.”

Meanwhile, local police officer, Julie DeParis, confirmed she was continuing to monitor the situation but called on villagers to contact Worcestershire County Council’s Highways Department to request speed data collection over a period of time.

She said: "If this data shows an issue with speeding I can then contact the Safer Roads Partnership which will judge whether any further measures are needed."
