THE ongoing saga over naming rights to roads on a new housing estate in Pershore has ended after Wychavon District Council announced the final list of 10 official road names.

The names were released less than a day after Pershore Town Council voted to have nothing more to do with the matter, its original decision to name the roads after plum varieties having been vetoed by Wychavon’s planning executive Judy Pearce.

It means six of the roads on the estate off Three Springs Road will be named after members of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Another will be named after an Australian airman, while the remaining three roads will bear the names of British servicemen.

All of the men are buried in Pershore Cemetery.

The roads will be called Desjardins Way, Hynam Road, Dowling Drive, Bishton Drive, Searle Close, Henderson Drive, Minson Drive, Mayville Close, Chevalier Close and Fleury Close.

Councillor Pearce said: “I am delighted that these new roads are to be named in honour of some of the men who gave their lives to preserve our freedom. These roads will be a memorial to all of them and a constant reminder of their sacrifice.”

Jill Desjardins-Brandelli, from Calgary in Canada, is the niece of Sergeant Joseph Ernest Desjardins. She said: “This is a true honour to all of us and shows countries all over the world the true appreciation that the British people have towards the foreign soldiers who were there for them.”

Pershore Town Council has meanwhile sought assurances from Wychavon that a new protocol be established to delegate all future road naming rights to the town council “so this situation never happens again”.
