AN Evesham councillor has voiced a number of concerns about proposals for almost 60 new homes in the town.

Evesham North district councillor Frances Smith has worries over road safety, flooding and overdevelopment regarding the proposals for 58 homes, which will be discussed by Wychavon’s planning committee this afternoon.

The plans submitted by Hallam Land Management Ltd have been recommended for approval and would see a new development on land at Avon Nurseries, Bewdley Street.

The development would comprise of 58 homes and include open space provision, new access off Bewdley Lane and car parking. Coun Smith, who is unable to attend the Wychavon District Council planning committee meeting, has written a letter to be read to councillors.

While she supports the general principle of development on a brownfield site, which will go some way to removing problems caused by a previously run-down site, Coun Smith has four main concerns.

She writes: “The access/egress to this site will exacerbate the already serious traffic movements on the junction at Albert Road/Bewdley Lane.

There have already been near misses and confrontation between drivers, many of whom use this route as an alternative to the High Street route.”

She adds to her concerns the safety of the young people using the Scout hut, potential flooding on the site and overdevelopment. The letter states: “I have yet to be convinced that the suggested layout of the site demonstrates the proposed dwellings are outside the 2007 flood plain extent. Should we experience similar flood levels in future years, many of the new residents could well be flooded.”
