I READ with indignation the letter from Andrew Taylor regarding elderly drivers.

I agree that most drivers do not use their indicators enough and it is my opinion that it should mandatory to do so whenever changing direction.

However, I am surprised that he is able to accurately attribute this fault to the over 60s.

The statistics for road casualties – car drivers killed or seriously injured in 2010 – shows that the age group 60-69 years had better figures than any of the younger age groups.

Statistically then one could suggest that it should be the younger drivers whose competence to cope with road conditions should be checked annually.

I assume from the phrasing of the letter that Mr Taylor is following these non-signalling drivers – could I have the temerity to suggest that he is almost certainly driving too close to the vehicle in front?

The recommended distance is one yard for every mph– 90 feet at 30mph – a gap of 45 feet or less is considered ‘tailgating’.
