THE sun shone, the crowds rolled up and Moreton Show’s Diamond Jubilee event was hailed a great success.

“I think the day has been very good,” said show president Rod Bird. “We were blessed by the weather after a very difficult week. Had we had a repeat of Thursday’s rainfall on Friday we would have been in big trouble with the ground getting so cut up.”

Although attendance figures will not be known for some time, Mr Bird said it was obvious from the overflowing car parks and the number of people round the main arena and the attractions ring, as well as elsewhere, that there were a lot of people on the showground.

Mr Bird said his tour of the show revealed just how much there was to see and do.

“When I was show chairman 12 years ago we had the JCB Dancing Diggers and so I was particularly pleased to see them again today,” he said.

Mr Bird’s association with the show goes back to 1981 when he was recruited by the then secretary, Babs Attwood, as an attractions area steward.

He has progressed through the society ever since and is able to speak with authority on the event.

“It still continues to be a show heavily reliant on a host of volunteers backing up our professional team and I would like to thank everyone concerned,”

he said.

“I can’t think of another event which pulls together so many different sectors of the community in such a constructive way and it also good that we are now getting some younger people on the show council.

“The show is still firmly established in its agricultural roots and I am sure we can all look forward to an equally successful future as the show has enjoyed over the last 60 years, building up to where it is today.”
