LOCAL author Dr Bob Shaw gave a lecture at Croome Park, to a joint meeting of the Friends of Croome Park and the Defford Airfield Heritage Group, entitled Women of RAF Defford – Heroines of Croome at War.
The lecture, given to an audience of 84 members and friends, told the story of the WAAFs, Wrens and ATS who served at RAF Defford during the Second World War, and the women scientists and engineers at Defford and their achievements in the development of airborne radar. The lecture described the bravery of Wren radar operators who flew dangerous airborne radar research missions over the Irish Sea and the Atlantic, and the little known but vital contribution of some outstanding women scientists during the War.
Happily, the lecture was attended by some of these women and their family members.
