I CELEBRATED National Carers Week with afternoon tea at Evesham Hospital on Monday. There are nearly six million carers in the UK, a staggering 10 per cent of the population.

Also on Monday, I attended a Twinning Association committee meeting. We discussed plans for the forthcoming visit by citizens of Evesham, New Jersey.

If you would like to be a host for Americans this September, get in touch.

On Wednesday, we climbed aboard the community minibus for a trip to Weston Super Mare on behalf of John Martin’s Charity. The charity takes six buses filled with Evesham’s older people to Weston each year.

The mayoress and I judged the Festival of Sport’s poster competition on Friday, a very difficult decision as all of the entries were so good.

On Saturday we went to Evesham’s Sue Ryder shop and opened their new bridal section. Some beautiful dresses and accessories all being sold in aid of this most worthy charity.

We then headed to the Town Hall for Evesham Volunteer Centre’s Volunteering exhibition. A number of local groups were there to explain the work they do in the community and how volunteers can help.

On Saturday we attended a fund-raising race night in aid of Avonbank Brass Band. A great night out and £500 was raised for the band.

Only one engagement on Sunday, but an important one – a service of thanksgiving for John Martin’s Charity. Almost 300 years after John Martin’s death, the charity that bears his name is working harder than ever. A fitting end to National Carers Week.
