TWO Evesham firefighters have arrived in Australia to compete in the World Police and Fire Games.

The games, which begin tomorrow in Adelaide, are one of the world's largest mass-participation events.

Evesham's Helen Tooley and Adrian Mayhew will compete in four of the 79 events.

Helen will take part in the ultimate firefighting challenge, which involves climbing up a tower and carrying various fire appliances.

She will also be competing in the indoor rowing competition.

The 33-year-old, who has been training four times a week in preparation for the contest, said: "I initially heard about the WPFG after competing in the World Fire Fighting Games last year in Hong Kong.

"I'm not confident that I will win a medal in either competition but I am looking forward to taking part."

Her colleague Adrian will be competing against police and fire officers from the US, New Zealand and Australia in the swimming and triathlon events.
