A 91-year-old patient showed a touch of bear-faced brilliance when she sold off her prize teddy bears during a breast unit fundraiser in memory of her late sister.

Jean Huggan, a patient of breast surgeon Mr Steven Thrush, organised an event for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign in memory of her sister Eileen.

Eileen was also a patient of Mr Thrush but died last year.

The event took place in Evesham on Saturday, March 21 and featured the sale of many teddy bears Jean had lovingly collected over the years as well as other stalls, entertainment and refreshments.

The amount raised was £582.15.

Jean's friend Sylvia Wisbey said: "She is a remarkable, bright and caring lady."

The breast unit is set to open this October at 220 Newtown Road in Worcester, on the site of the Worcestershire Royal Hospital. ]

A deal has been signed between bosses at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and the Haven which provides, free of charge, a wide range of therapies that help people deal with the physical and emotional side effects of breast cancer.

Specialist nurses and experts in nutrition, exercise and emotional support provide tailor-made programmes for each visitor.

The aim of the unit is to provide rapid efficient assessment and care, treatment in welcoming and private surroundings, facilities that will maximise the skills of our specialist teams, fewer return visits, good news delivered swiftly, space for complementary therapies and support group meetings, counselling rooms for reflection and discussion, new clinical equipment including an ultrasound machine for sole use by the breast unit and high-resolution imaging screens, flexible space for use by support groups as well as other patient activities and a prosthesis fitting room.
