The members of Pershore WI were taken on an Okavango Odyssey by speaker Phred Newbury at the start of their February meeting. The illustrated talk was in two parts: first a safari through the Maremi Wildlife Reserve where we saw beautiful photographs of Phred’s close encounters with various wild animals and then we learnt about the pre-school at Samochima, a remote village in North-West Botswana, which she visits to help teach the children and arrange improvements to the building. It was all most interesting and Helen Roe gave the vote of thanks.

President Sheila Allies welcomed several visitors to the meeting and presented Helen Roe with a birthday card. Because of the bad weather, the January meeting had been cancelled and so Sheila reminded members of the new committee and their positions.

We had enjoyed a splendid New Year lunch at Evesham Golf Club. Liz Gunhouse had been selected to go into the County Catherine Guest Bursary Draw and we wish her good luck.

The Competition Cup for the highest number of points in the competitions during the past year was won by Elizabeth Kearney, with Pam Rayner second and Joan Didio third. The competition for an item beginning with R was won by Pam Rayner (Rolls razor) with Pat Shakespeare second (rain water) and Yvonne Stancombe third (Regimental cap badge). The competition for an item beginning with S was won by Diana Staines (Strelitzer) with Minnie Dugmore second (snowdrop) and Yvonne third again (Shaun the sheep).

Members were reminded of forthcoming events: the Daffodil meeting at Fladbury, the Pershore Group meeting at Eckington, the Institute outing to Glastonbury and Wells in May and a possible visit to Highgrove.

The next meeting will be on Thursday March 11 at 7 30 pm in the Wulstan Hall. The speaker will be Louvain Beer with a subject “Honey, I’ve poisoned your lunch”. The competition will be for an item beginning with the letter T. Visitors and new members will be most welcome.
