SHORTLY after noon on Tuesday, April 16, several hundred people headed for Sheep Street and Shipston’s Townsend Hall.
What was the reason for their haste? They were keen to find out more about the U3A and whether Shipston and District could support a group of this rapidly growing charity. Geoff Olssons, who has chaired a preliminary team to set up the meeting, welcomed two U3A speakers, one from the Dorridge U3A, one of several Solihull groups and Carol from the U3A organisation.
Both clearly explained the purpose of U3A which is to encourage activity, whether social, cerebral or physical.
Activities will be chosen and organised by the group.
The audience present completed an on-the-spot survey of their interests, expertise and willingness to be involved in the U3A.
More than 50 ideas, including Italian, country dancing, bridge, Scrabble, chess, tractor maintenance, walking, art history, painting, pottery, cooking, Latin, French conversation, gardening, singing and literature were on offer from the meeting.
A committee will be set up, leading to the launch meeting on Tuesday, May 21, at Shipston’s Townsend Hall There is a national U3A website and the group will eventually set up its own site. Other benefits include a monthly meeting for members to meet for tea and a speaker, and free legal helpline and online learning opportunities .
Don’t worry if you missed the meeting – come along on May 21 and find out more!
