I WRITE in response to your front-page article ‘Driver hit 130mph on notorious Vale road’ (May 29).

Firstly, you said a driver drove along the road at 130mph, almost double the 70mph limit.

The A46 is a single-carriageway road with a national speed limit. That means the maximum speed for cars and motorcycles is 60mph, and for lorries 40mph.

You also mentioned in the article that Councillor Hardman said the driver was reckless, with which I fully agree.

As I attempt to pull out onto the A46 every morning I witness many reckless drivers.

You also say Councillor Hardman has previously campaigned for improved safety on the road.

Unfortunately, as I recall, he has suggested that the road be converted to a dual carriageway – a ridiculous solution that would serve only to increase the speed along the road, increase the already intrusive noise and make access to local villages even worse than it is now.

The only solution is to slow the traffic down, and this can only be achieved by implementing average-speed cameras.
