BRIAN Druce (Journal, January 22) may be correct about the journey times of the trains between Evesham and London, but the service seems pretty good to me.

Apart from a couple of odd times, you don’t usually need to wait for more than an hour, although the nice HST carriages are used mainly at the ends of the day.

The journey home is very pleasant after Oxford as the crowds depart, the pace slows and the train wheezes and sighs its way through what one of the inspectors refers to as Middle Earth.

Tickets from Evesham are quite a bargain, as there is no premium for just turning up and travelling – about £50 off-peak and £80 if you need the early-morning train.

That compares favourably with driving for one person, let alone the £160 price of the equivalent ticket from Cheltenham.

The station is much better kept these days, too, and the staff cheerful. Maybe not perfect, but credit where due.
