NOT many weeks pass without some comment on the traffic problem in our town! Recently a writer supports previous letters about the town’s traffic, a special note being made for pedestrians at the bottom end of Bridge Street and Workman’s Bridge, not the first letter of course for people on their trotters. Have pedestrians ever been considered in that area, even when Abbey Gates (sorry - Riverside) car park and shops were built?
The potential redesign of the High Street? It has already been written, there is “concern in high places” that the potential re-vamp of the High Street is unlikely to solve the traffic problem. I defy the relevant authority whoever it is, to make a firm decision and let the traffic go left (if it wants to) at Swan Lane toward Workman Bridge. Try it! The situation could not be any worse than it is now. There is a very good chance it would be a lot better. The opportunity to have done something logical with common sense (without the professionals) was the day the contractors started laying pipes in Abbey Road. I often wonder if there was any penalty clause for time in their contract? A different subject, but their pace of work brings us back to the subject matter of the town’s traffic flow. It’s never too late to change.
