RESIDENTS had to be evacuated after fire broke out at the Lygon Arms Hotel in Broadway.

Firefighters from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) were called at about 6.05pm on Sunday (18) after reports of a chimney fire.

Crews from Broadway were at the address within minutes but after assessing the scene they called for further back up from Evesham and Pebworth and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Worcester.

The fire, which had broken out in a fireplace on the ground floor of the hotel, was brought under control within a couple of hours.

Two people were treated by ambulance crews for smoke inhalation.

Station Commander Toby Kempton from HWFRS said: “We arrived to find a fire in a large inglenook fireplace on the ground floor of the hotel, which had caused extensive smoke-logging to the ground and first floors.

“Smoke was also starting to affect the second floor, and a sprinkler system had also activated.

“Staff at the hotel had ensured the safe evacuation of all of the residents and carried out an effective roll call, and so our principal concern was the fire spread within the building, particularly in light of the heavy smoke logging and the complex design of the property.”

“A fire at historic premises like this can be devastating but thanks to the efficient evacuation by staff at the hotel and the initial assessment of the first officer at the scene, damage was kept to a minimum and the hotel was able to get back to business within a few hours.”
