THE Robert Dover’s Games, which celebrated their 400th anniversary last weekend, took place as usual on a windy hill above Chipping Campden 40 years ago, attracting a record crowd of several thousand.

The hit of the games was undoubtedly the 13th Coventry Scout Band whose display was as dazzling as anything seen in Campden or anywhere else.

There were two bouts of professional wrestling during the event to compensate visitors for the planned parachute drop, which was cancelled due to the poor weather.

This harked back to the old games – as did the other well known Dover’s Games sport of shin kicking.

A gentle, cultured team of Campdonians matched against Fred Archer’s bunch of primitives from Bredon Hill in the contest.

The following day saw bright sunshine bath Scuttlebrook Wake goers as they watched Maypole dancers in the village centre after the crowning of the 1972 Queen, Helen Hart.
