A PERSHORE man has admitted attacking his parents following an argument at their home.

Shane Dowding, of Cornmore, appeared at Worcester Magistrates, charged with two counts of assault by beating on Sunday, June 30.

Keri Brookes, prosecuting, said the 21-year-old had gone out at 10.30pm the previous evening and did not return home until 3.30pm the following day and when his mother asked him where he had been, he shouted aggressively at her.

She told the court Dowding told his mother when his girlfriend – who is currently pregnant – had their child he would not let them see the baby, to which his mother replied: “If she has any sense she will have an abortion and never have your baby.”

She said Dowding then threw a burger at her and punched her before attacking his father, who had entered during the argument, grabbing him by the throat.

“He was heard to say to his father that he was going to kill him,” she told the court.

When the police arrived at the scene he ran away and, when he was arrested shortly after, denied the attacks, although later admitted them in court the following day.

“Mrs Dowding says she is his mother and she loves him but she hopes he gets the help he needs,” she said.

Magistrates were told Dowding’s mother had suffered reddening and a bruised cheek, while his father suffered soreness in his neck following the attack and that he had previously been aggressive towards them after he had been drinking.

For Dowding, Kate Oliversaid he was “deeply ashamed” of his behaviour but his mother had asked for the court not to enforce a restraining order as she was keen to make up with him.

Magistrates sentenced him to a 12-month supervision order to include conflict resolution and problem-solving classes, as well as 100 hours’ unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim’s surcharge. He has also been forbidden from entering his parents’ home for the next six months.
