WORCESTERSHIRE'S newest MP has promised to take the mantle from his predecessor's "great legacy" - and has spoken of his immense pride at his elevation.

Nigel Huddleston, who was elected to Mid-Worcestershire last month, delivered a powerful maiden speech in the House of Commons by saying he is incredibly lucky to represent a "wonderful" county.

The 44-year-old former Google executive, who is sitting on a whopping 20,532 majority, used it to name-check all the "idyllic" towns and villages in his patch and mention Worcester Warriors - telling MPs how "quintessentially English" his part of the county is.

He also told the chamber that championing job creation, the growth of the internet and tourism would be a key focus - and paid his own special tribute to Sir Peter Luff, his predecessor.

"Having spent the last few years working for one of the world’s leading technology companies it will be no surprise to hear that I intend to be a digital advocate in this place," he said.

"The UK’s digital economy employs more than 1.5 million people and is growing at double GDP growth.

"We can be proud that the UK is one of the most advanced digital economies in the world and I know this Government is absolutely committed to making sure it remains so.

"The other sector I wish to champion in this place is travel and tourism - again one of the fastest growing sectors of the British economy.

"Since 2010 one third of all new jobs in the UK have been in the travel and hospitality space.

"Tourism overall contributes a staggering £127 billion to the UK’s economy each year and sustains over three million UK jobs including many in my constituency."

He said it was only possible to have "great schools and great hospitals" with a strong economy that generates taxes to pay for them, calling new job creation "vital".

"That is why it is vital that we continue to support businesses and support job creation thereby supporting workers and their families," he said.

He also said Sir Peter, who was first elected to the Commons in 1992, "leaves a great legacy in Worcestershire", mentioning his efforts on Norton Parkway, the Hartlebury Castle restoration, Droitwich canals revamp and Regal Cinema in Evesham.

"I will strive to serve the kind and generous constituents of Mid-Worcestershire as well as Peter did," he said.

He also said there is "no such thing as a safe seat" but admitted Mid-Worcestershire is "almost as true blue as you can get".

Mr Huddleston is one of 180 new MPs currently delivering their maiden speeches in the Commons.
