A SPECIAL ceremony is taking place in and around Dudley Council House this morning to honour the men and women of the armed forces.

The Armed Forces Flag will be raised and flown from the top of the Priory Road building this week – leading up to Armed Forces Day – after a special ceremony in the council chamber from 11am.

Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Steve Waltho, will lead the civic ceremony, marking the start of the council’s celebrations.

Cllr Waltho said: “It is very important we celebrate the work of the armed forces, something that is a priority for this council and the borough as a whole.

“The flag symbolises our commitment to remembering these brave individuals in the week leading up to our Armed Forces Day celebrations.”

A number of civic dignitaries will also attend the flag raising event, which will include a short address from the mayor, a poem reading and a prayer. Guests will then be invited into the Mayor’s Parlour for light refreshments.

Celebrations will reach a climax on June 28 at Himley Hall and Park on the Armed Forces Day, with a full family day of free activities.

The event includes a flypast by the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota, a performance from The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, children’s activities, and ex-military vehicle display and a vintage fair.

Veterans will also be presented with HM Armed Forces Veterans Badges by the Mayor.
