POLICE were at the former Worcester Walk-In Medical Centre in Farrier Street after receiving reports of a dog locked in a car.

A spokesman from West Mercia Police said police were called at 11.47am this morning to reports of the dog “in distress” locked inside a grey Vauxhall Astra with the windows closed.

The RSPCA were called and officers went to try to open one of the car’s windows to rescue the dog.

Darryl Steventon, who saw what happened, said: "The police were brilliant. They sent an ex-dog handler down to assess the state of the dog and force entry.

"The owner came back, but couldn't see what the problem was."

Marrienne Williams, who was also there, said: "The man came back as the police were breaking into the car to let the dog out.

"He didn't even make a fuss of the dog when she got out! He had no water for her or anything. It was very sad to see.

"The police were fabulous, as were the nurses.

"I called a dog warden I know for advice, and the advice was followed.

"Many people were concerned for the dog.

"It is ridiculous that people still think it is OK to leave a dog in a car."

Police and animal-lovers have repeatedly warned against the dangers of leaving dogs in cars in hot weather.

To report a dog locked in a car call police on 101, or 999 if you believe it is in immediate danger.
