POLICE have issued a safety alert after a 11-year-old was followed along New Road in Astwood Bank.

The incident took place between 3.20pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday, May 4 as the girl was walking home.

She realised she was being followed and the man, who had a lisp, asked her where she lived and tried to walk in front of her.

She ran off toward and the man shouted after her.

The girl then walked to to the end of Chestnut Road where she saw someone she knew but the man could no longer be seen.

He is white, of a skinny build, 30s and about 5 foot 11 and was wearing a black hat, black trousers and a black coat with orange writing on it.

Detective constable Ryan Townsend said: "We are continuing to investigate this incident and we are actively following a number of enquiries.

"I want to reassure residents and parents that we are continuing to conduct patrols in the area. Likewise, the girl involved and her family are being supported by specialist officers.

"We would encourage parents to speak with their children about talking to strangers. We would ask children to never go off with anyone they do not know, get into a vehicle with a stranger, accept gifts off a stranger or wander off on their own."
