HOMES were evacuated as 30 firefighters from six fire engines tackled a severe house fire in Worcester tonight.

The blaze in Kentmere Close, Warndon, involved a fire in the roof space of two neighbouring terraced homes.

In total six fire crews attended following the call at 6.12pm.

In total there were three crews from Worcester, two from Droitwich and one from Malvern.

All people in the houses have been accounted for said Guy Palmer, group commander for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

Roads, including Langdale Drive and part of Ambleside Drive are closed to traffic.

He said keys were obtained to one of the houses, allowing firefighters to rescue a dog which was trapped inside.

Mr Palmer said the cause of the fire would not be known until fire investigators had made further enquiries.

Speaking to the Worcester News reporter at the scene he said: “Very quickly we searched each of the adjoining properties to make sure everyone was out.

"Our first priority is to get everybody out, to save lives then deal with the property itself.

"It’s too early to say the cause.”

In total 12 breathing apparatus were used.

Langdale Drive was closed to traffic and vehicles coming from Tolladine Road along Ambleside Drive were diverted along Troutbeck Drive by a police officer.

The firefighters used four hose reel jets and two main jets and used ladders and hammers to punch holes in the roof space.

Mr Palmer said: “We have just started peeling away the roof tiles to get into the roof space itself. We have crews placed internally and externally.

"We have no injuries.”

Smoke could be seen billowing out of the back of the pitched roof as firefighters on ladders used hammers to chip away the roof tiles to make an entrance on the two neighbouring homes.

Paramedics were on standby from West Midlands Ambulance Service and neighbours turned out in large numbers to watch.
