DRINK drivers were among those arrested in Worcester over new year, including one following a crash in which a car left the road.

Meanwhile a 43-year-old reveller died after being struck by a car in Sandwell, West Midlands Police have reported.

The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) announced its first arrest of the New Year took place on the M5 at junction 5 for theft of a car.

Also on the M5 between junctions 5 (Droitwich) and 6 (Worcester), officers from the CMPG arrested a driver who blew 91mcg at the roadside, over two and a half times the drink drive limit of 35mcg in 100ml of breath.

Force duty inspector Tony Garner for West Mercia Police said the custody block at Worcester which as 23 cells was now full, mainly as a result of alcohol-related incidents.

He said: "We have had no serious violence that I'm aware of but there have been a lot of incidents of low level public order and people being drunk and disorderly."

As he was driving in to begin his 7am shift he said there were still revellers in Worcester as he was heading in to begin his shift.

He said: "Most of the people are apologetic when I go to the cells and say 'sorry, I was an idiot last night'."

Crash investigators are appealing for witnesses after a man out celebrating New Year died in a collision on a busy Sandwell road.

The man was struck by a car in Wolverhampton Road, near the junction of Hagley Road West, just before 8pm last night.

The 43-year-old, who is from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 46-year-old female driver involved in the collision stopped nearby and was spoken to by officers. She is continuing to assist collision investigators.

A crash involving two cars happened at 7.45am in Ledbury Road, Hereford with the vehicles made safe by Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

The West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was unable to provide a formal statement about how busy New Year had been or the nature of incidents they had responded to until Tuesday, January 3 but anecdotal accounts were provided by paramedics via Twitter.

Paramedic Rob Moore said: “En route from our last case we found a gent asleep at the side of the road! We've arranged a taxi home for him.

Paramedic Leigh Rogers said: “First of 2017-a drunk young lady who called saying she'd broken her ankle. Assume it wasn't because she ran off shortly after we got there.”

The Operations Patrol Unit for West Mercia Police said a drunk driver did not manage to negotiate a bend on Fish Hill. They blew 66mcg at the roadside and have since been taken to the cells.
