Barnes scores as St Mary's 'A' finishes second

THE Cotswold League’s preliminary stages are almost complete with just one postponed match to be played.

St Marys completed their ‘A’ team pool fixtures but could not reproduce previous good form and finished runners- up ahead of Blockley and Mickleton.

They took an early lead against Mickleton through Archie Barnes but their opponents then dominated and made the final score 1-1 through Daniel Weston’s first-time shot from the right wing.

The next match was decided by two soft free hits from a distance which Alastair McCallum struck past a leaky St Marys defensive wall to give Tredington the top qualifying spot.

Holders St James, Temple Guiting and Mickleton came together for the second-half of the ‘B’ team competition.

All three lost to a Chipping Campden School team who finished with a 95 per cent record over the whole season.

Only Ilmington (1-0) and St James (1-1) spoiled the run.

Chloe Whitworth, Joshi Gibb and David Musgrave netted one each against St James, while Will Palmer scored twice against Temple Guiting as did Gibb. Whitworth completed a 5-0 win.

Gibb’s hat-trick laid the foundations of an easy 8-0 victory over a young Mickleton team as Archie Haines, Whitworth (2), Anna Wookey and Musgrave also netted.

The three primary school teams sorted out who would top the rankings and Henry Bell put Temple Guiting 2-0 up against Mickleton, who pulled one back through Edward Irwin.

Despite working hard, Mickleton fell 2-0 to St James with goals from Ryan Anderson and George Lewis.

St James took an early lead against Temple Guiting through Anderson but Daniel Mills equalised with two minutes left.

They had a power-play in the closing stages but could not make the breakthrough.

When the ‘B’ teams meet again after Christmas, St James and Temple Guiting will be in strong positions as they play for final places.

However, they both must face Ilmington, who already have six points from their two wins.
