WARRIORS boss Dean Ryan says he has been nothing but open and honest with players who will be leaving Sixways at the end of this season.

While the decisions have already been made regarding those who are surplus to requirements, the Worcester director of rugby has no qualms about calling upon them during the Premiership run-in.

Ryan admitted that some of the players used off the bench in the vital win at Newcastle last weekend won’t be at the club next term, but praised their contribution and commitment to the cause.

The Sixways chief said: “We have been quite clear to the group that are coming with us and we’ve been quite clear with the group that are coming in.

“If you have an adult conversation with someone and you are transparent about the reasons, that doesn’t affect week-to-week selection.

“That’s just about maturity between me making the decision and the individual. Some of the decisions taken going forward are financial, some are progress, some are about development and others are about the here and now.

“Each person can sometimes find themselves on the wrong side of that, but that doesn’t stop you selecting them.

“There are guys who came on at the weekend and made a fantastic impact, but won’t be here next season. That shows the maturity of the group .

“We have made a conscious decision to have a much younger squad and we are going to have to be a place where people are desperate to create opportunities for themselves, because the model the club has been using doesn’t work.

“That leaves some people on the wrong side of things, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t playing well or contributing now.”

Meanwhile, Ryan has backed centre Andy Symons to build on the impressive glimpses he has shown for Warriors.

He said: “Andy has been robbed of a couple of opportunities to win a starting spot because of injury and that makes it difficult at this stage of the season, but he’s making a decent claim.

“He can open people up, he can find space and in every game he’s played he seems to get out the back, so there is definitely a case being built for him to start.”
