EVESHAM United were punished for failing to take their chances as they went out 3-2 after extra-time to Newcastle Town in the FA Cup preliminary round.

The Jubilee Stadium replay, required after Saturday's 1-1 draw in Staffordshire, was a one-sided affair with the Robins creating an incredible amount of opportunities.

Early-season leading scorer Mat Liddiard put Evesham ahead when he converted an 18th-minute penalty awarded after James Campbell was felled in the box.

The Robins kept creating chances with Newcastle keeper Raj Gill keeping the ball out of the net with the pick of several superb saves being from a 30-yard Bradley Gray strike.

But then came the sucker-punch with a 45th-minute goal from Newcastle’s Aaron Bott with a crowded box and poor clearance leading to the goal that sent both teams in equal at the break.

The second half was much like the first with the Robins creating most of the chances only to be denied by the Newcastle keeper.

In the 65th minute against the run of play Newcastle substitute Sam Wilson, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, broke through the Evesham defence, rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net to give the visitors the lead for the first time.

But it only took Evesham three minutes to get back level when Matt Bennett found the net from a Gray free-kick, managing to squeeze the ball through a crowded box.

Despite the Robins still creating chances a great piece of last-ditch defending by Evesham's Linden Dovey in the 90th minute sent the game into extra-time.

Both sides were looking for a breakthrough which finally came in the 119th minute when Newcastle striker Bott settled the game, sending the visitors through to the next round and denying the Robins a local derby at Stratford Town in the first qualifying round.

The corner count probably tells the story with Evesham having 19 compared to Newcastle’s three.
