IT proved to be a tough opening day for Worcestershire in their County Championship match at Glamorgan, but late wickets did give them hope.

The Pears were skittled for just 109 runs inside 41 overs as James Harris (4-18) and Australian Michael Neser (4-40) rattled through the order, with 39 from Gareth Roderick providing the only real resistance.

It was a disastrous opening hour for Worcestershire as Neser and Timm van der Gugten ripped through the top order.

David Lloyd (48) and Aussie Marnus Labuschagne (42) were heading towards Worcestershire's score by themselves but the visitors took five wickets for just 32 runs to get a foothold in the match.

Taylor Cornall was making his first appearance of the season but it was a brief stint for the opener as he was out LBW to van der Gugten for 6.

Ed Pollock (10) and Jack Haynes (0) were then out inside three deliveries of the ninth over by Neser before Marnus Labuschagne took a brilliant catch to dismiss Azhar Ali for 8 off the bowling of van der Gugten.

Brett D'Oliveira came and went for a single run just two balls later when he was trapped LBW by Neser and Adam Hose (0) lasted only 12 balls before chopping a wide ball from delivery onto the stumps.

At 34/6, Worcestershire were heading towards a very early dismissal but Matthew Waite and Gareth Roderick managed to finally contribute some runs as they got to lunch at 66/6.

But Waite (22) could not build on his steady start and the 34-run partnership was broken swiftly after the restart when the all-rounder was brilliantly bowled by Neser.

Joe Leach (16) and Roderick (39) threatened some late resistance with 38 for the eighth wicket but Harris removed them in the 39th and 41st overs before he took the final wicket of Adam Finch (0) to wrap up the innings.

Leach made an early breakthrough for the visitors once Glamorgan began their innings as Edward Byrom edged through to Roderick in the third over without scoring.

In came Australian Labuschagne and after three boundaries, he was dropped on 13 at 26/1 before he and David Lloyd began to get into their stride.

The Worcestershire bowlers struggled against the experienced pair and the boundaries started to rack up as the hosts moved towards taking the lead.

But Leach would finally end the 81-run partnership as he brought Lloyd's innings to an end just two runs short of his half-century.

After tea, the Worcestershire bowlers produced some better deliveries and as the scoring rate dried up, Waite made the big breakthrough as he bowled Labuschagne for 42.

The hosts were just starting to creak at this point and Adam Finch hit form at the right time to take three wickets in a brilliant spell of bowling for the seamer.

Sam Northeast (9) and Kiran Carlson (13) were both trapped LBW by Finch, before the bails were sent flying off Chris Cooke's stumps in the 38th over as Glamorgan lost a sixth wicket.

Glamorgan did recover in the final stages of the day as Billy Root (25*) and Michael Neser (33*) put on 57 for the seventh wicket.
