WHEN Frederick Challis passed away, widow Gwen donated a trophy to be played for between married couples.

The Challis Cup is played for annually at Broadway and is a Greensome Bogey event when pairs play a single ball between them after the initial tee shot aiming to beat the par for each hole.

A relatively small field contested this year's competition in the string winds when only two couples succeeded in ' beating the course' with Mark and Andrea Steadman claiming the trophy with a score of +4.

Tony and Jenny Holt were runnesr-up (+2) with Peter and Nadine Simpkin (even) in third place.

MEMBERS of the ladies section played in the Lady Captain's Away Day at Brailes where seven teams of four took to the fairways.

The format was a stableford competition with the best two ascores to count on pars four and five and all scores of the par threes.

A bracing breeze made life tricky throughout but didn't prevent Gillian Spencer, Dinah Wood, Jenny Masser and Frances Wilkinson claining top spot after amassing 81 points.

The club's youngsters continue to impress with 17-year-old Ryan Cleary seeing his handicap reduced to 5.1 following victory in the Midweek Medal.

The winner has shaved an amazing ten shots off his handicap this season alone.

Eleven-year-old Oliver Farrell was again to the fore finishing second.
