SISTERS from Pershore’s Abbey Park Middle School are showing off their skills on the ski slopes.

Maria Luczak, 11, and Magdalena, 10, only arrived in Worcestershire last September with their family from Lodz, Poland, due to work.

The girls regularly travel to their Italian club of Falcade in Veneto for training and competitions.

They hail from a sporting family as their grandparents represented Poland at volleyball and basketball, while mother Iwona was a successful ice skater.

The Luczak sisters also swim for the Worcester club, while Maria finished seventh in the Polish Figure Skating Championships for eight-year-olds and Magdalena 18th at the younger level.

But they have really flourished on the piste with Magdalena second in the Italian Dolomite League and age group champion at the national championships in Italy.

Maria was third in the league in an impressive family double.

In the Polish championships, Magdalena won her age group two years running and both girls became schools’ alpine champions.

Maria slid off a tough course into the holding fence in the recent Italian National League meet but escaped injury.

Magdalena continued her hot run by winning the under 11s giant slalom with the best overall time and looks set to qualify for March’s finals.

Sporty Abbey Park already have several swimmers topping the British rankings with the help of support from headteacher Lynn Evans and her staff.
