PERSHORE bagged five gold medals among 10 in total at the Worcester County Age Group Championships.

Simon Sweatman, nine, won the 100-metre individual medley with a new county record of one minute 25.82 seconds to top the UK end-of-year rankings with club-mate Christopher Vizard third in a personal best of 1.35.00 Sweatman collected his second gold medal and county record in the 200m freestyle with 2.38.91.

He comfortably achieved his first Midland district time of 2012 for 10-year-olds. Chris Vizard impressed with 2.57.82.

The Worcestershire best crashed again with UK top rank Sweatman winning the 50m backstroke with ease in 37.76.

Pershore fielded four nineyear- old boys in the final and William Gearey rose to fourth in the national list with third place in 43.22.

Harry Sykes, 13, smashed his personal bests, setting 1.11.58 in the 100m individual medley and 33.35 in the 50m backstroke for two bronze medals and 2.21.27 in the 200m freestyle for fifth spot.

Improving in the 200m freestyle and 100m individual medley was Joseph Doyle, 12, with 2.36.51 and 1.24.07 respectively.

In the same age group, Owen Leeks also set a new personal best in the 100m individual medley with 1.24.39 and 37.71 in the 50m backstroke.

For the girls, Isobella Woodcock, nine, was second in the 200m breastroke with a big improvement of 3.45.06. Lizzie Vizard, 13, set a personal best with 3.06.70.

Maisy Robertson qualified in third place for the 50m backstroke finals in 42.79, while Naomi Marsden was just behind on 42.86. For the 10- year-olds, Amy Weston swam 39.19 for fifth in the finals.

In the 50m backstroke’s older divisions, Lizzie Vizard swam to a 38.40 finish and Tazmin Pugh won her final with a county record of 32.73 for second in the UK rankings.

Setting her 10th Midland district qualifying time was Pugh, 12, as she smashed her best in the 200m breaststroke, recording 3.01.53.

She followed that with an even better display in the 400m individual medley with 5.29.03 for fourth place. Pugh took her third gold of this year’s championships in the 100m butterfly with a new best of 1.10.69 which left her second in the UK.

The second day of the third weekend was cancelled due to damage to the Wolverhampton pool following a break-in.
