ALEX Gregory had to settle for 15th in his GB quadruple scull at the World Rowing Championships in Munich after a bad draw hit their chances of qualifying for Beijing.

But the 23-year-old Evesham Rowing Club sculler from Wormington said: "We'll bounce back and win an Olympic place at next summer's last chance regatta in Switzerland.

"We got a really bad draw in the repechage where we needed to finish in the top two to make the semis for an Olympic slot and went quicker than the second heart, but got squeezed out in our race by Canada and Cuba.

"Then we won our C semi-final with a good row, but saved out worst for last in the C final for 13th to 18th places, losing out to Argentina and Canada by half a length.

"In the critical races, we've been slow off the blocks and despite being quickest through the middle 1,000m, we've left ourselves with too much to do.

"That last race was a really disappointing way to exit the worlds after a promising season where we finished eighth twice and seventh in the World Cups," added Gregory, whose crew came home a length up on China and Croatia.

"We'll just have to go away, work really hard and earn an Olympic slot the hard way."
