Home sweet home for United after revenge win

EVESHAM UNITED 4, HEMEL HEMPSTEAD TOWN 1.

EVESHAM United concluded their home fixtures in the British Gas Business Premier Division with a stunning victory against play-off hopefuls Hemel Hempstead Town.

It was the Robins' first win in five games and revenge for a 4-0 drubbing at Vauxhall Road earlier in the season.

Danny Lennon rattled the visitors' woodwork before Evesham took a 30th minute lead.

There seemed little danger when Kevin Slack got the ball wide, but he rode the challenge of three defenders before beating Ian Brown in the visitors' goal with a deflected drive.

The lead was extended five minutes later. The Hemel defence were caught napping, allowing Michael Hayden to race clear and easily beat the advancing Brown.

A minute into the second-half, Brown denied Evesham a third, somehow getting a hand to push aside Slack's shot, destined for the bottom corner.

But the Hemel stopper was beaten for a third time soon after. Leon Woodley was upended in the box by Des Byrne and Lennon sent Brown the wrong way from the resulting penalty.

Chris Dillon pulled a goal back for Hemel on 67 minutes, but the Tudor's cause was not helped when Byrne was sent off for a horrific challenge on Simon Fitter.

Evesham completed the job in stoppage time. Danny Scheppel created an opening for Jermaine Clarke, and the Robins substitute netted with a clinical finish past Brown.

EVESHAM UNITED: Vaughan, Watson, Hayden, Hodnett, Joe Clarke, Woodley, Fitter (Scheppel 86), Blake, Slack (Jermanine Clarke 70), Lennon (Davis 80), Hyde. Subs not used: Ager and Wood. Attendance: 124.
