NEW Evesham ladies’ captain Joan Hunt started her year at the Fladbury-based golf club with the traditional drive-in.

Hunt hit three straight tee shots down the first fairway to 35 members, who were waiting to see who would win the prizes.

There was then a shotgun start for a par competition in the sunshine.

The Division One winner with +5 was Ruth Masters ahead of Mel Evans (+1).

Sheila Crane (+2) took Division Two in front of Jill Cleary (-1) and Division Three went to Dee Machin (+3) followed by Pat Saville (-1).

Meanwhile, Evesham men’s winter league final proved to be a one-sided affair.

The father-and-son pairing of Trevor and Ben Woodward took the title with an impressive 5&4 win over Jerry Cain and Stuart Green.

Ben Woodward finished the game off with a birdie on the par-five 14th hole.

Vice-captain Brian Osborne presented the trophies and praised all the competitors as well as organisers Fraser Williamson and Mark Harrison.

Evesham held their Ward Bekker qualifier at the Craycombe Links course on a cold, windy day.

Playing to a foursomes format, the father-and-son pairing of Les and Oliver Farrell triumphed with a score of 69.

The runners-up were Merv Nedic and Darren Nightingale on 71.

Others to make the quarter-finals were Trevor and Ben Woodward, Andrew Witts and Jim Jones, Paul Callaghan and Stuart Ridley, John Richards and Russ Leeming, Osborne and John Machin and Phil Day and Pete Stanley.

Meanwhile, 68 The Vale seniors turned out in dry, breezy conditions for a three-ball stableford in Bishampton.

Division One went to Rob Sharp with 34 points ahead of Ed Mountney (31) and Gerry Clayton (31).

Nick Fielden (40) took Division Two in front of Norman Cannock (39), Dave Carrington (35) and John Milward (35).

Division Three was won by Larry Taylor (37) followed by Brian Leggot (37), Mike Spittle (34) and Roy Bond (31).

Nearest the pin was Ray Heitzman on the fifth hole.

Seniors captain Sharp congratulated Keith Richards for achieving an eagle three, nett albatross two on the eighth, which is the notorious hill hole.

Broadway ladies completed their winter league in the sunshine with a better-ball contest.

Lin Everitt and Pat Green won round six with 40 points ahead of club newcomers Barbara Buggin and Wendy Hicks (37), Julia Fortescue and Sue Jackson (36) and Veronica Rudd and Sue Jones (35).

The overall trophy winners will be revealed at the spring dinner at the end of this month.
