EVESHAM Golf Club celebrated their seniors captain’s day as two teams of 12 played a Ryder Cup format.

Team Europe, under captain Mike Brumage, recorded a convincing 78-67 win over Team USA under vice-captain Martin Williams.

They played six holes each of greensomes, better ball and singles.

A large field took to the fairways at Evesham’s Fladbury course to battle it out for the men’s May medal.

Low scores were again at a premium with only two members carding scores of par or below.

Division Two winner Michael Haughtey triumphed with 70 nett off his handicap of 14 with Dave Meridith (90 gross 18 handicap 72 nett) runner-up.

Third was the in-form Merv Nedic (83-10-73) as he also won Division One ahead of Steve Young (84-11-73) and Boz Harris (83-9-74).

Roger Smith (95-21-74) was third behind Meridith in Division Two.

Twenty-eight Evesham ladies played a friendly Texas scramble drop-out.

The winners with 75.3 points were Jenny Marston, Ann Cowley and Jean Bevan ahead of Sue Taylor, Annie Bird and Marlene Billings (82).

Seventy-two The Vale seniors played a four-ball stableford qualifier from a standard scratch of 72.

Division One was won by Gerry Clayton with 41 points followed by Alan Taylor (39) and Steve Kirby (38).

John Hooper claimed Division Two with 40 in front of Peter Bolshaw (39), Peter Burleigh (38) and Steve Donovan (37).

The Division Three honours went to Roy Bond (42) ahead of Geoff Wilson (37), Peter Morris (37) and Geoff Browne (36).

Meanwhile, the Rummer Cup mixed match was played at Broadway.

A Dutch couple played the course several times and enjoyed it so much they donated a trophy in 1969 for the annual mixed pairs foursomes medal.

Lin and Mike Everitt came in with 72.5 nett to make them clear winners followed by Frances and John Friend (74), leaving Vicky and Ian Watkins to take third position on count-back.

A full field of Broadway ladies competed in the County Kitcat qualifier as a swirling wind made scoring tricky.

Pat Beaman took first place in the Silver Division with 36 points ahead of Lyn Chambers (34) and Lin Everitt (33).

In the Bronze Division, Chris Parkinson won with 37 in front of Maggie McDivitt (33) and Jude Vidler (31).

The best six cards were sent to the county for consideration for the next round.

A ladies’ team tackled the Mail on Sunday National Golf Classic fifth round at Walmley, Sutton Coldfield.

Heavy rain made conditions difficult but Broadway secured an impressive 3-2 victory and now hope for a home tie.
