BROADWAY bowlers finally won the Tony Allcock Trophy after making the final stages for the last three years.

In the mixed over 60s double rink competition, they beat Yeovil in the final and now represent England in the British Isles Championships next June.

The match started in atrocious conditions as the rain lashed down but Broadway’s Steve Aldren raced into a 14-3 lead after 10 ends while John Oliver held a two-shot advantage.

Yeovil came back strongly in the second-half as the rain eased off to get to 19-17 down on the 19th end.

With the Somerset side holding a three on the 20th end, Aldren drew the shot with his last wood and a two to finish gave him a 22-17 win.

It was tighter on Oliver’s rink and he found himself 17-16 down on the 16th but five shots on the next four ends gave Broadway victory. On a cloudy morning, they had faced a Dorset team in the semis and both rinks won, Aldren 21-17 and Oliver 20-13, to put them into the final for the second time in three years.

Their first match at the final stages saw Broadway beat Marden from Kent 45-38 with Aldren triumphing 29-19 but Oliver losing 19-16.

Meanwhile, Littleton can now only finish Concorde League runners-up behind likely champions Pershore, who have led the table since the start of the season and lost only two games.

However, the rink of Graham Norledge, Rob Heming, Dave Smith and Bob Ashby starred with a 13-shot triumph as Littleton beat Pershore 105-99 after leading by 10 after 15 ends.

Littleton boasted three winning rinks to two but then lost a crucial game at Droitwich’s Vines Park by 12 shots when they needed maximum points for a chance of claiming the league.

But they did triumph on three rinks with Mike Emms, Dave Gardner, Ron Cooke and Heming winning 24-13 and Tony Guy, Rob Winnett, Rob Ormsby and Alan Beale hitting back to take their match 24-21.
