There was a light at the end of the tunnel for one man’s quest to get a streetlight repaired.

Michael Beard, 69, has spent the best part of four months trying to get a new lamppost lightbulb installed outside his house on Harvard Avenue, in Honeybourne.

After 116 days, 82 phone calls and 203 emails, a new lightbulb was finally installed on Thursday, November 25.

Speaking after the triumph he said: “‘Twas not the hundred-year war, but the 116-day battle to get a streetlight repaired.

“When I started this, what I thought would be a simple request turned out to be a mammoth task, but I was always told perseverance will win in the end and that’s how I have led my life, see life’s problems to the final outcome.

“I feel quite good inside having completely this not only for my own satisfaction, but to ensure the residents in the local vicinity have a safe passage now.”

The former Evesham College lecturer added: “I don’t see myself as the Equaliser, but if I see something wrong or needs doing, I am not afraid to take anyone or organisation on to get it sorted.

“I believe this comes from lecturing for 35 years, it gives you a fast brain and a certain amount of confidence. Problems do not phase me, I just work out the way to get through it.

“It was a simple task initially to get a light bulb changed, but the challenge it gave me was interesting and it’s given me a lot of satisfaction to finally get it repaired, 116 days of job satisfaction.”

With Mr Beard having spoken with various councils as well as MP Nigel Huddleston and Long Lartin Prison, finally Rooftop Housing took responsibility for the streetlight.

He was was told the company’s contractor Property Care would be coming out to solve the issue on December 13 but even Rooftop Housing agreed this was not good enough.

He said: “Tenacity and relentless pestering Rooftop finally accepted responsibility for the repair and at 11.30 today there was light, a bright light. Such a memorable moment in our hours of darkness.

“The old bulb was full of water, and I am not sure how long the repair will last as they did not seal the unit.”
