A 49-YEAR woman who racially abused a police officer has been ordered to pay the public servant compensation.

Wendy King, of Main Street, Offenham, near Evesham, appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court for sentencing after a wait of over a month to learn her fate.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, told the court police were called to an argument between King and her neighbours in Main Street at 11.30pm on November 11 last year.

The prosecutor said, on arrival, they found King drunk.

"They were trying to avoid arresting her for anything," Mr Beale said.

The prosecutor explained King eventually was arrested on suspicion of public order offences, which did not result in charges.

After PC Shaquille Lakin escorted King to a police van, King became racially abusive.

Body-worn footage of the incident was then played to the court so magistrates could hear what was said.

In his victim personal statement the officer described it as a "disgusting, hateful act" he should not have to put with, adding he had felt "extremely emotional" about it.

In her interview King told police she had been drunk and remembered shouting and swearing but could not remember the racist comment.

Mr Beale said: “She accepted her behaviour had been unacceptable.

“She said she was not a racist -  you don’t have to be a racist to use racially abusive language.”

King, who admitted racially aggravated intentional harassment/alarm/distress – words or writing, was defended by Rob Macrory.

The solicitor highlighted to the magistrates there was a pre-sentence report for them to consider which had made it clear King had issues with alcohol abuse.

He added the work recovery service Cranstoun had done with her would hopefully be a benefit to both her and society.

After leaving the courtroom to deliberate magistrates returned with chairman Susan Mitchell telling King the crime was considered “more serious” as it had been to serving police officer on duty at the time.

The chairman added they could see King was “genuinely remorseful” and embarrassed to be in court.

King was sentenced to a 12-month community order including 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and a nine month alcohol treatment requirement.

King was ordered to pay a small fine of £50 and £100 compensation to the officer.

The defendant was also told to pay costs of £185 and victim surcharge of £114.

King was ordered to pay the full amount, £399, within 28 days.

The case was heard at the court on Friday, (May 26).
