A FORMER Evesham town councillor and her daughter have set up a 24-hour-a-day anonymous foodbank for people in need.

Emma Nishigaki and her daughter Alice Nishigaki have set up the makeshift food bank outside their home at 22 Albert Road.

Ms Nishigaki said the idea was to help people who may not be able to access normal foodbanks and are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

She said: "Evesham is very well catered for with foodbanks but they are not always open at convenient times for people to access them.

"A lot of the people struggling during this cost of living crisis are full-time workers and people who are on minimum wage.

"The traditional food banks may not be able to support these people so we are offering an alternative for those who need it.

"This Secret Santa Foodbank allows people to visit anonymously 24 hours a day to pick up some much-needed essential items."

Ms Nishigaki originally started delivering goods to those in need but became injured in the recent icy weather.

She said: "I made a Facebook post a while back now asking if any residents needed shopping picked up for them during the icy weather we have been having.

"I was quite overwhelmed with how many people came forward asking for support so I would visit the supermarket and drop off the items needed at people's homes.

"This was going well until I slipped and broke my ankle on the ice. I started to get people leaving donations at our door and even posting money to help with the costs through our letterbox.

"All of this has gone directly into the food bank."

Ms Nishigaki is away for Christmas this year, but her Alice will be continuing to stock the foodbank with essential items.

She said: "I am away for Christmas this year but the food bank will continue to be stocked by my daughter Alice and we are looking to continue running the project until the New Year.

"If it continues to be popular we may look at extending the food bank in the future."
