Police have taken over the investigation into a house explosion in Evesham.

Homes were evacuated and several people rushed to hospital after a suspected gas explosion at Hemingway on Tuesday, December 27.

Until now, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service had been working with police on an investigation into what happened.

However, responsibility has now been passed over to West Mercia Police and the Health and Safety Executive

“We can confirm that a joint investigation is underway between West Mercia Police and the HSE following a gas explosion at a property in Evesham, Worcestershire on 27 December 2022,” said a spokesperson for the force.

“As the investigation is complex and ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Last Thursday, December 29, the property’s gas supplier, Wales and West Utilities, confirmed that the explosion was not related to the mains gas network and that no leaks had been detected on the mains in the local area.

In total, ten homes had to be evacuated following the explosion, which occurred just after 5pm, while 35 properties had their gas supply cut off.

Four people were hurt, including a 31-year-old man who was left critically ill and had to be taken to hospital.

Superintendent Nigel Webster led the police response on the night.

Speaking at the time he said: "This was, of course, a devastating incident, and our thoughts are with those injured, their families and the local residents.

“The community pulled together last night to support each other and we’d particularly like to thank the local public house, which kindly gave shelter to those that had been displaced from their homes last night.”

A message on the page reads: "Our thoughts are with the whole family and we send get well wishes too.

"The Evesham community have come together well and in particular the Fairfield community have rallied around, lets now show our respects and raise funds for the family."
